The former senator regarded as a founding father of Tartan Day in the United States has witnessed how the event is celebrated in Scotland.

In 1998 Trent Lott proposed US Senate resolution 155 - introducing a Tartan Day to the US on 6 April every year.

The date marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which urged the Pope to recognise Scotland's independence.

Mr Lott watched a re-enactment of the signing at Arbroath Abbey.
