Bamse is Montrose's very own war hero and is buried in the town. The St Bernard dog from Honningsvag, Norway stole the hearts of all who knew him. Bamse (meaning teddybear) arrived in Montrose on the minesweeper Thorodd during World War ll with Captain Erling Hafto and generally looked after his fellow sailors. If anyone started a fight with one of his crew, Bamse got up on his hind legs and at over six foot tall, clamped his great paws on the assailant to end any fight.

20060830Auchmithie0108PR
The HAAR Festival at Auchmithie near Arbroath, Angus which takes place this Saturday(2nd Sept).

The festival features smokies being made the traditional way on the hillside (Auchmithie being the original home of the Arbroath Smokie) and a Muckle Backit Challenge Race which involves keeping your fellow competitiors feet dry while carrying them on your back up a steep hillside from the boats at sea. To finish things off is the high spirited fisher wedding with the happy couple being paraded up the street to the sound of the fiddle..
