Bamse is Montrose's very own war hero and is buried in the town. The St Bernard dog from Honningsvag, Norway stole the hearts of all who knew him. Bamse (meaning teddybear) arrived in Montrose on the minesweeper Thorodd during World War ll with Captain Erling Hafto and generally looked after his fellow sailors. If anyone started a fight with one of his crew, Bamse got up on his hind legs and at over six foot tall, clamped his great paws on the assailant to end any fight.
The Bamse Project under Montrose Heritage Trust raised £50,000 to erect a larger than life-size bronze statue of Bamse at Montrose Harbour. Half the donations came from Norway.

Historic fishing harbour at Cove Bay, Aberdeenshire whos pier was closed off overnight as boulders were put in place to block the entrance in the continuing saga between fisherman and wealthy landowner and Plastic Surgeon Pralhad Kolhe who wants to close off the harbour for his own personal use. The few remaining boats are gradually being squeezed into a smaller area with the hope of eventually making it impossible to fish from the harbour.

The Arbroath smokie, a world renowned delicacy, is haddock smoked over woodchips by a method originating in the nearby village of authmithie.
Local legend has it that a store caught fire one night, destroying barrels of Haddock preserved in salt. The following morning, the people of Auchmithie came to clean up the ruin and found some of the barrels had caught fire, cooking the Haddock inside. Further inspections revealed the Haddock was edible and quite tasty.

The Arbroath Smokie originally came from the small fishing village of Auchmithie, 3 miles North-East of Arbroath.

In reality, it,s much more likely that the villagers at Auchmithie are of Scandinavian descent as the Smokie making process is similar to methods of smoking which are still carried out today in areas of Scandinavia.

Aberdeen City Council ordered Kohle to remove the rocks and is waiting for a response.

Originally built in 1813 as a base of operations for the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Signal Tower housed the families of the keepers stationed on the 'rock', along with the vital shore staff who ran the tender. The name Signal Tower comes from the signalling apparatus installed atop of the tower building that was used to communicate between the shore staff (the Master Of The Tender) and the keepers of the lighthouse

In the 18th Century Johnshaven was one of the largest fishing communities in Scotland.

There were 26 boats and at least 130 fishermen in 1722.

The largest boats with a crew of 10 were used only for 3 months in the summer for distant cod fishing, the smaller boats with a crew of eight the rest of the year, there being 13 boats of each type.

Formerly a fishing village, Pennan became famous in the 1980s for being used as one of the main locations for the film Local Hero, and representing the fictional village of Ferness. Film enthusiasts have come from all over the world to make a phone call in the red telephone box which featured in the film. The phone box was in fact originally put there only as a prop for the film, and then removed, but as a result of public demand a genuine telephone box was installed close to the same spot, and is now a protected monument

Originally known as Gamrie, Gardenstown was founded in 1720 by Alexander Garden specifically as a fishing village. On the hillside to the west, and visible from most parts of Gardenstown, are the remains of the Church of St John the Evangelist. This predates the village, being built in 1513, and celebrates an even earlier event, the defeat of the Danes here in 1004.

 Old ruins near Findochty,Aberdeenshire.

Findochty (pronounced 'Finechty') stands on the shores of the Moray Firth. With its painted cottages, a scenic harbour overlooked at the west by the local war memorial, and at the east by the white painted Church of Scotland, Findochty is a jewel of the north east of Scotland.

Portsoy lies on the north facing coast of Aberdeenshire, approximately midway between Cullen and Banff. Of all the many ports along the Aberdeenshire and Moray coasts, Portsoy was one of the earliest to be established, and as a result is one of the most fascinating.

Signal Tower Museum Arbroath viewed from the harbour.

Arbroath Harbour which has been made an official haddock landing port by the Scottish Executive.

At its peak years between 1900 and 1980, around 40 whitefish and pelagic vessels worked from Arbroath, with hundreds of men employed directly as fishermen, hundreds more employed ashore to service the fishing vessels and to process the fish. Quota cuts and decommissioning took its toll on the fishing industry throughout Scotland from the 1980s to present.
