Taylor’s Auction Rooms sale this Saturday contains a fascinating collection of African, Australasian & Pacific Rim tribal art. This includes a wide range of figures from Congo, Zambia, West & East Africa. Amongst the more interesting is a small group of fetish figures. One such example in the sale is a Male Congo figure with a Hessian bundle to his head this 33cm high figure is expected to sell for £450-550. Other ethnic items include fertility figures from Africa, clubs, paddles, boomerang & spear throwers from Western Australia, Solomon Islands, etc. Other items include a selection of 19th century Japanese ivory carvings including figures, netsukes, etc as well elephant tusks, scrimshaws, Inuit marine ivory carvings originally from Greenland, etc and wide range of 17th-19th century Scottish basket hilted swords, British & European edged and armed weapons, medals, etc.
There is a also an extensive collection of paintings, wine, porcelain and furniture that includes a collection of cranberry glass & a range of Royal Crown Derby animal figurines, an Arts & Crafts oak Dining Room suite, paintings by John Bellany, Wm A. Gibson, etc.

Blair Drummond safari park opened in 1970 in the grounds of Blair Drummond house, which was purchased by Sir John Kay a Glasgow tea merchant in 1916. Having no sons he passed it to his nephew Sir John Muir, father of the present owner Jamie Muir. The house remained a family home until 1977 when it was sold to the Camphill Trust, a charity that cares for the handicapped. The existing late Victorian house replaced a mansion house built in 1715, which was sited in what is now the giraffe enclosure. . AboutScotland
