Marines set off from RM Condor base in Arbroath on the final leg of 1664 Challenge marking 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines....
Throughout the duration of the Royal Marines 1664 Challenge more than 2,000 marines have taken part, but a core group of six will take part in the whole journey – day in/day out.
The six men have been drawn from the six main Royal Marine units:-
30 Cdo, 40 Cdo, 42 Cdo, 43 Cdo, 45 Cdo and the Commando Logistics Regiment.

The Royal Marines Corps was formed in 1664 and this year marks the 350th anniversary of that event.
To commemorate the historic occasion, the challenge was devised by Major Jon Clare and Lt Col Gary Green, that would test Royal Marines both physically, and mentally, and display the true commando spirit and determination to succeed.
The Royal Marines 1664 Challenge was the result – an event that covers over 4000 miles in a various countries by ski, sail, cycle, canoe and then by foot.
By the time the Royal Marines 1664 Challenge concludes with a marathon around London in July, more than 4,200 commandos will have taken part.
As well as celebrating the Corps’ 350th anniversary, the Royal Marines 1664 Challenge is hoping to raise £500,000 for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF) the overarching Royal Marines charity.

Pic shows one of the elite six chosen for the challenge...Marine Tom Barker from 45 Commando who has been part of the corps which has skied, paddled and run over 4000 miles for charity

Marine Tom Barker, 19, joined the Royal Marines in November 2011, at the age of 16. He completed the 32 weeks of arduous Commando training to pass-out as a Royal Marines Commando, the youngest in his Troop, being awarded the Physical Training medal.

After pass-out Mne Barker was posted to 45 Commando RM, Arbroath,With them he has been deployed on COUGAR ’12, visiting Malta, France, Italy, and Albania, and CETUS ’13 (Norway). “I enjoy learning new skills when deployed: the more knowledge and experience I can gain the better soldier I can be, especially in challenging environments like the arctic”

Mne Barker has specialised within the Corps, joining the Mountain Leader branch. As an ML3 he has been trained in vertical assault, climbing, mountain movement, surveillance and reconnaissance. “I chose the ML branch because of the amount of responsibility that you’re given, the chance to learn new skills, and a personal interest in reconnaissance”

He comes from Carlisle, Cumbria, where he attended Morton School. At the age of 15 Mne Barker took part in the School’s annual 50 mile walking challenge: he ran the event in under 9 hours, marking him as a highly capable endurance athlete. “My teacher told me I should have a go at running the distance: I didn’t really know what I was doing, I just found a pace I felt comfortable with and kept going”.

Nutscene Ltd; Kingsmuir near Forfar, Angus.
The company began trading in 1922; the patented "Greentwist" centre pull lock tie spool of twine was first produced in Dundee, Scotland. When this wonderful green twine was used to tie up plants it was, of course, 'not seen' giving rise to "Nutscene!"
Pic shows a historic pic of twine being manufactured.

Princess Royal unveils a statue of Robert Watson-Watt by Edinburgh sculptor Alan Herriot. Watson-Watt was born and grew up in Brechin and was the pioneer of radar. The ununveiling also marks the anniversary of the outbreak of World War Two

The radar system Watson-Watt helped develop was described as Britain's "secret weapon" in the war, and was credited with winning the Battle of Britain.

It has taken the Angus town's Robert Watson-Watt Society eight years to raise the funds for the statue which is the only memorial to Watson-Watt.

AN Angus Council project to bring one of the most beautiful gardens in Scotland back to life has come to fruition.
A six year project has seen £1.8m invested in the historic Montrose Mid Links to restore them to their Victorian splendour.
The nine garden parks run parallel to the High Street and form an integral part of the Montrose townscape.
They are a tribute to Victorian philanthropy and vision, and in particular the foresight of one man George Scott, who created the gardens in the late 19th century.
His imagination turned what was a quagmire in winter and a dust bowl in summer into a series of elegant gardens which runs the length of Montrose Town Centre.

Broughty Ferry Castle was built as defence against the English in the 15th century. It has had a very turbulent history, being held by both the English and the French in the 16th century. It was reduced to a ruin by 1787.

Bought by the Edinburgh and Northern Railway in 1846, it was then resold for military use in 1854. It became an ancient monument in the care of the Ministry of Works in the 1930s. It still stands today, a well known landmark in Broughty Ferry, housing a natural history museum.

The New Inn Hotel, Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Ellon probably derives its name from the Gaelic 'Eilean' meaning island and the town's historical significance is based on its situation at the ford on the River Ythan. EllonFor many years it was the main crossing point for traffic going to and from the Buchan area. The New Inn Hotel, located opposite the river, was previously a changeover point for horses pulling coaches between Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Angus Archives new location
Angus Council's Angus Archives opening at Restenneth Library at Restenneth Priory near Forfar. Portrait of founder of the library George Graham Guthrie Hunter.

The ancient priory church at Restenneth, by Forfar, is believed to have been founded by Nechtan, king of the Picts about 715.
After many years being used as a cattlefold in the 19th century, the priory church was given into the care of Historic Scotland's forerunner in 1919. In 2005 Angus Archives relocated to the site, once more giving Restenneth a prominent part to play in the heritage of the area.

Music rang out yesterday (Sunday) in what is believed to be the first ever concert at the Patrick Allan Fraser Mortuary Chapel in Arbroath .

The category A listed building was designed and built by the Scottish painter and architect, Patrick Allan Fraser, in memory of his wife, Elizabeth and took almost nine years to complete. He gifted it to the people of Arbroath in 1880.

Money is currently being raised to restore the Arts and Crafts chapel in order that it can be opened to the public as one of Arbroath's great places of historic interest.
